Scott Peoples Memorial Race and Foundation

In December 2006 Scott Peoples was tragically killed while on a training ride near Mansfield in regional Victoria.

An exceptionally gifted sportsperson and delightful young man, Scott was on the brink of breaking into the cutthroat world of professional cycling in Europe. Scott’s family along with a number of Shepparton cyclists and other interested people have come together to honor Scott’s memory through the Scott Peoples Foundation and Memorial Race.

The race is an annual event and takes place in December each year.

Tips for fishing the Broken River from local experts

“It’s no good being where the fish ain’t” – Rex Hunt

It’s pretty easy fishing in the Broken, it’s sluggish with deep pools and runs, mud and sand bottom:

    • Carries Murray cod, golden perch, redfin, carp and blackfish
    • An occasional Murray cod to 30 kg is caught
    • Stocked above Gowangardie Weir with golden perch by the Department of Primary Industries
    • Weir is a good fishing access point with golden perch over 1 kg, redfin and carp

So it’s just a matter of walking the banks and fishing with either live shrimp or a spinnerbait.

HINT: take a few photos of your favourite spots while the rivers are down so that when the water rises you will know where all the deep holes are, and where the large unmovable structure is.

If you can put some hours in on the water or off the bank you should have some good results. Remember to keep fishing around snaggy areas as that’s where the fish will be. Recently received a hot tip that a red or a red/black spinnerbait will produce monster golden perch in the Kialla Lakes in March.

    Fishing in surrounding areas

We recommend you get out and sample all the fishing around Shepparton: the Goulburn and Broken Rivers, Kialla Lakes and the irrigation channels are all fishing well (Trout & Redfin) and are right at our doorstep.

Catching CODA lot of people swear by the old bardy grub, but I reckon if you’re chasing a cod that you wish to keep for a feed, your best bait to do that would be some worms or live shrimp, if you can’t catch a cod on either of the baits I have mentioned, you simply just won’t catch one. Of course lures are the main choice these days and spinnerbaits are probably the best to use.
